In 2010, the Photon Band's Art DiFuria claimed to be at work on a "quadruple album." While that hasn't come to pass, Pure Photonic Matter (volume 1) is the first album in a projected trilogy of releases. As a result of this expansive approach, this album is even more eclectic than earlier releases in the already-eclectic Photon Band catalog.

On the first six tracks alone, DiFuria and company move rapidly from sound collage, to MC5 jams, to Beatle-influenced beauty, a Sabbath-like dirge, Meat Puppets-influenced psychedelic country, and an avant-space-junk instrumental. "It's this diversity," Phil McMullen of Ptolemaic Terrascope wrote, "which lies at the heart of the success of this album...it's the brilliance of Art Di Furia himself which is at the root of it....A timeless classic, which, like many a fine wine, will only improve with age."
